He's the Bat, Man!

Um, yeah, sorry for the pun. I usually put a lot of thought into these, but today...no. Why did I pick Terry McGinnis and not Bruce Wayne? 2 reasons, 1, everyone would be doing Bruce. 2, and this is the real reason, McGinnis fights crime IN HEELS!!! No, I'm serious, that's badass! It sucks to get kicked in the face, but how much more does it suck to get kicked in the face with a heeled boot? 38% more, that's how much!
Also...he runs in heels, and never falls. I know most people say that Batman's superpower is just money, but I'm voting that it's actually the heels thing. That's pretty awesome. Superman never tried anything like that, because he knew he'd fail at it.

There is this common misconception

...that women do not commit serial murders.
To be honest, the idea of doing Poison Ivy didn't enthuse me. She comes across to me as just a sexy lady in green. And, well, by and large she is. While most of the villains of Batman are pretty complex or compelling, she isn't (as far as I am aware, I don't know much about her.) So I decided I'd start playing with her and see if I couldn't come up with something that actually interesting to me and that was to some extent actually creepy.
Most people have this misconception that there are no female serial killers. This is not the case at all. Sadly, women actually tend not to get caught as often when they do kill because overall they tend to favor poison and slower methods that are harder to track then men. One of the more common stories you seem to hear about with women who kill are women who are caretakers poisoning those they are suppoused to help.
So with that in mind, I came up with Dahlia Belquis (yes, I know the actual Poison Ivy has a totally different name, but I'm just starting from scratch here, let's pretend there is no Pamela Lillian Isley).
Dahlia Belquis was a nurse by day and dabbled in researching the medicinal properties of plants after work. She had a daughter who came down with a terminal illness. In an attempt to help save her daughters life, she gave her an injection of plant-based medicines that she thought would cure her. Sadly, it sent her child into cardiac arrest. However, when the autopsy was performed, Dahlia realized that the organic compounds that had caused her daughters death had dissipated in her blood stream. Essentially, the medicine she was researching was an untraceable poison.
Dahlia had never been a particularly stable woman emotional, and after her daughters death she realized that she rather liked being doted over by people who felt badly for her. She found the sympathy appealing ina way nothing else had been and she found the idea of herself enamored with the idea that others viewed her as particularly caring and devoted. Shortly after the funeral Dahlia moved to Gotham. She needed a new start, she needed to go somewhere where no one knew about her child.
A recent bout of bizarre ilnesses have been plaguing Batman's city. (Think like the Tylenol murders in the 70's, Dahlia is somehow tampering with drugtstore medications to induce illnesses.) No one can figure out what's causing the illnesses, and sadly, they seem to occur most often in children. Batman tracks the clue's to Gotham's children hospital where there seems to be an especially attentive nurse attending a large number of patients.
So yeah, basically I turned Poison Ivy from a sexy environmentalist to a nurse who studies organic compounds and has a severe, severe case of Munchausen by proxy syndrome. I imagine that somehow, when Batman (and I for some reason imagine him taking this case on with Batgirl) corner this woman she's freaking the hell out and probably has a mental breakdown based around the fact that even though she was trying the help her, she actually killed her own daughter.
But hey, at least she's still a redhead in green.
Oh, and if you're curious about what plant she's pinching there (and what she's wearing in her hair), it's suppoused to be white Oleander, a relatively common, but super poisonous decorative plant. Well...suppoused to be...but I got lazy drawing it.

It wasn't all bad

Dick Grasyon hasn't been Robin for a long, long time. Certainly, there must be times when he looks back on it all and think to himself "you know...it wasn't all bad."
Also I like chubby 11 year old Batman...and this is one of the sloppiest comics I've ever made.

Laugh and the world laughs with you.

...Cry and you cry alone.
So, until recently I have to admit I didn't find the Joker that frightening. He was more of a fun villain to me than anything else. This may be because of how he was played in the show (which is how I was introduced to the mythos). There are a few exceptions to this of course, and the one that has always creeped me out has been this running thing that the Joker will force people to smile or laugh. (Doesn't bother me in live action for some reason, just cartoons.) The one that always creeped me out the most was the instance of him doing this to Robin in the Batman Beyond film "Return of the Joker"...maybe it's because Robin is so clearly forced to do this that it plays more to me like child abuse and pedophillia than it does cartoon villainy. (There is a part where Robin is laugh-crying that always gets me.)
So there you go. It's not the Joker that gets me...it's crossing that safety line I think. I mean, it's one thing to have a villain that's embodying chaos by trying to orchestrate some insane plan to make people act crazy, or take a hit at his arch-nemesis...it's another when you have a villain that embodies chaos by screwing around with something innocent just because he can.

BATMAN : A Time To Mend

batweek - arkhamcity - batman
a time to tear and a time to mend
ecclesiastes 3 : 7
well, here it is me trying to portray the dark knight. i am not really into superhero stuff but i think batman is kinda dark somehow. that, actually, is something you find in every human being. even when you don't realize it or when you don't want to admit. in batman, it is quite obvious; he's not actually modest about that for sure ;)

oh, this is something to finalize everything. i can't include catwoman and robin for some reasons. they just don't fit LOL.

BAT-WEEK BATMAN

"I AM THE NIGHT"

So finally it has come down to the man himself. the cape crusader, the dark knight! Batman is the story of a man obsessed with his past. vowing not to let what happened to him happen to anyone else. Batman can go from being your typical superhero fighting strange out-of-this-world menaces to being the most realistic guy out there fighting crime and corruption in a messed up city. I think that this range and the fact that he can be scary as hell and probably the only human not afraid to go toe to toe with boy scout superman is the reason why Batman is my favorite character ever.

my first sketch is of a more super heroic version of the character but for me Batman has always been about fear and how to use the night and the shadows as a weapon. For me Batman should always be a creature of shadows and shapes. Its probably the influence of Kelley Jones (whose comics were one of my first contacts with the comic book world) So, as a second sketch I posted the way I would probably portrait Batman if I ever draw a story about this amazing character (Drawing Batman is one of the most conflicting things I have come across. I'm always debating whether to draw him completely or just as a moving shadow striking fear into the criminals) For me Batman will always be about the cape and the cowl.

Well I think that's enough... Enjoy!

BAT-WEEK JOKER

My favorite villain of all times! It's no secret that I'm a huge Batman fan and of course my favorite villain has to be the Joker, I love the concept of chaos that this character embodies. Plain evil plain crazy.

JOKER : A Time To Laugh

You’re someone who’s different, but who wants to be the same as everyone else. And that, in my view, is a serious illness.

BAT-WEEK POISON IVY

Not one of my favorite characters but surely one of the sexiest. Miss Pamela Isley!

my poison

batweek - arkhamcity - poisonivi
ha! who doesn't want to draw sexy characters? i do. i love drawing sexy ladies; especially when they are bad and wicked. some people have problems about women being sexualized in comic books but i don't. i love the way they are actually "naked" with clothes lines and little folds here and there to "indicate" skin-tight-costume. i think the male characters suffer the same treatment but iron man LOL.

i remember my first time drawing a sexy wicked female character. it was LADY DEATH when i was 17. wish i could scan it now. i left it in jakarta. too bad.

oh, in indonesia, it's already my mom's bday so i posted another sketch just for her. she is THE BEST MOM an artist can have; she keeps reminding me about my deadlines, helping me scanning everything, doing every nitpicky things i couldn't handle by myself, reminding me of my every meeting with my clients, going places to find me every piece of crafts i need for my exhibition, etc. THE BEST. PERIOD. i love you, mom, always.

Robin.. Who?

batwek - arkhamcity - robin
well, i've got to say that maybe robin is the least of my favorite characters in batman family BUT in arham city, the costume is just the coolest robin costume i've ever seen. i have to agree with jorge. after trying for more than 15 minutes, i came up with this. don't kill me yet. LOL.

BAT-WEEK ROBIN

This is the design for Robin for the Arkham City game. I think this is one of the coolest robin outfits I've seen.

Oh Mr Batman!

Also...I drew this. Because we all know the real reason Batman won't marry Catwoman is because she had too damn many cats. Most people don't know that he has terribly, terrible allergies!

BAT-WEEK CATWOMAN

BATMAN WEEK everyone!! and to start: the lovely miss Selina Kyle! it's gonna be a good week.

Ooopps!

Hi, y'all! So there went final week of Fall quarter without me being able to post ANYTHING! Shame on me! But this week, Jorge decided to give us all hell by doing the Batman: Arkham City. I have NEVER done any super or anti- hero character, besides a stupid sketch of Spiderman I did when I was 7, so we'll see. On Monday, we all gonna do Catwoman of our version. Let me be honest here, this sketch takes more than 15 minutes, mind you :D.

Have a great winter break to you all and have a great Monday!
